2021 January 14 — Books Etcetera

I really wanted to have something more up here more recently than this.

I have ended up being distracted from "work" type stuff. I have been playing some games, My Life in Portia on my computer and Ikenfell on the new switch.

I want to say more about both of these games, but I think that's a different post.

A little while ago, someone was saying how they had so much trouble reading in 2020, and had really not read very much (I think it was under 10 books), which was very unusual for them.

I realized that I'd read a good number of books and that I estimated it at about 20 books in 2020, and since then, I counted 15 books that I read or more completed in 2020, and I think after that I found another 3 which were not in that count.

I tend to read a number of books at a time (pretty close to 5 on the go at any one time). Some of the reading is at a pretty steady pace, because I read those books at regular times, in regular places. Other reading is far more sporatic, as it's only when I happen to be in the space for reading that book, that I read it.

I guess, I want to read more this year if I can. Or better keep track of what I'm reading. I've been trying to have a bit of a log of what I'm reading, but lately that hasn't really been working that well.

Some of why it doesn't work that well, is I've not been happy with the tools that I've used to do that logging. Mostly I've been trying to keep a review on Goodreads, but that ends up being not so good. When I was managing to follow other people there, it was easier. Now I know I'm still following most of those people, but until recently, it didn't seem that they were updating that often.

Also, I've not been that happy with the fact that Amazon has ended up doing some not so good things with it.

Which brings us here. This is my blog. I feel that I can safely say that I have reasonable control over it. I can't say it will stick around forever, even if I want it to. That is maybe the biggest reason that I don't really like the self hosting of stuff.

But, honestly, I think it's a good thing that it's easier to consider that it might be possible to remove without too much difficulty. Sure some place like The Internet Archive may end up archiving it, and not really be able to easily remove that.

It sill is fairly likely that I could just take the site down, and people (real people, not sure about scammers, and bots) will just not find it, and move on.

So, I do want to at the very least, have something here about the books that I'm reading. The current "in progress books" are:

So, those are the current in progress books. I do think I want to have some sort of "tags" or "categories" system so that I can have a way to find posts of a given topic. I haven't got a good way to handle that yet, but I think something like books might end up working.

Design Thoughts

I was talking with a friend about the deisgn of the site and I want to do more with it. Mostly to better have something which is better readable on different devices.

I was working on the Chapbook "Game" which we've been plugging away at for a while, and there was some talk about design, and one thing I saw was about the number of characters in a line, which is considered, "ideal". It states 45-90 characters, and about 2.31 "alphabets".

So here are what those end up looking like.

3abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

4abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

5abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

6abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

7abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijlkmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

8abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijlkmnopqrstuvwxyz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

This gives a horrible amount of stuff which I will be using to help to figure out the design better. Currently (at least as it's on my computer) I am getting 5 upper case alphabets, and 7⅔ lower case alphabets.

I have broken it now in 2 alphabet chunks. This allows for breaking when the lines are longer. Though it's not really what I needed to do.

I did that because I thought my floats were not working because of the long lines, but it was because I've not worked with CSS for so long that I had no idea of how things work.

I have the start of some styling which I'm a little happier with. Though I feel that some of it really needs a more work. I just don't really know what to do with it.

Just a picture

This was something that I've been wanting to get up for a bit. It's just a photo of the orange tree (with oranges) that we have growing in the house.

We've had this tree for a while. The oranges are not very apealing for eating, but they do make a decent marmalade if we want to eat it.

Orange Branch with Oranges

I think that does it.

This is where I have kind of got the start of a feature about having some topics to the blog. The topics that I've got this in are:

I think that'll do for now.
